Corridors of Power

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2012 - 00:00 -- BY POLITICAL DESK
A top journalist turned away a group of councillors on Wednesday after their plan to defect to TNA backfired. The civic leaders had travelled to the city expecting a financial windfall after their defection. Their plans went awry when the defection failed, and they ended up hungry and penniless on the strange Nairobi streets. Their only salvation, they thought, was the journalist. They duly called him with the promise of an “exclusive story” in exchange for some money. The journalist rejected the offer outright, telling them they deserved the treatment TNA had subjected them to because they are a greedy lot.

It seems Thursday's decision by a parliamentary officer to withdraw an assault case against Makadara MP Mike Sonko didn't go well with some people. Angered that the withdrawal was done behind his back, a senior cop at Parliament Police Station berated the officer and accused him of acting without consultation. The cop then made several calls where he was overheard explaining the matter to somebody on the other end of the line. His junior staff complained that he was angry because Sonko "didn't give him something".

Police officers who escorted an MP suspected of engaging in criminal activities to court were were beside themselves with laughter after the journey. The officers were overheard describing the man as a coward. They explained in great detail how the MP had cried throughout the journey, pleading with them not to harm him. The man, who had appeared on TV saying he was ready to die, shocked the police when he burst into tears after his arrest, leaving the cops wondering where the all the bravado had gone.
