Corridors of Power

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2012 - 00:00 -- BY POLITICAL DESK
We hear Chief Justice Willy Mutunga is mad with the judicial officer who authored the Sh400 multi-million tender for his official residence. Corridor has heard that CJ believes that the officer not only overlooked the background of the tender but also embellished the details to paint him in bad light. Apparently, Mutunga rejected a state offer to rent a Sh1 million mansion and opted to continue living in his rented apartment. He also resisted the idea of building an official residence fearing another scandal hence the idea of buying an existing one. We are told the CJ avoided Muthaiga, Runda, Karen and Lavington areas preferring a “middle class area.” Now the CJ is mad over the impression that he has been living in an official residence that was not good enough and that he is moving to a Sh400 million palace. He suspects the timing of the advert was meant to compare him with MP's and their gratuity scam.

An ODM nominated councillor from Central province has been trying to sneak his way to TNA. Sources close to him have however leaked that his intention was to be a mole. It is no wonder therefore that the man was recently booed at a funeral in his own village.

A junior cop was overheard swearing that the much-touted resistance for a civilian Inspector General of Police resides at the top echelons of the force. The cop said his junior colleagues do not really care who becomes the IG so long as their terms, conditions and perks improve. He dismissed as “hot air” the talk of police sabotaging the new IG if he is a civilian. The positions have since been advertised.

An Editor, journalists and policemen have been named in a confidential report by a Nairobi businessman of having received bribes to arbitrate in a tug a war between two wealthy Nairobi businessmen. One of the parties has now written to the CID demanding the arrest and prosecution of the named individuals. According to the businessman, an editor with a leading newspaper allegedly received Sh50,000 to provide favourable coverage. A top TV journalist has been accused of receiving Sh 500,000 from one of the parties to kill a story while top cops have been accused of pocketing millions of shillings to stop a criminal investigation.
