Wanjiru hints intention to decamp from ODM

By Karanja Njoroge
Housing Assistant Minister Margaret Wanjiru has hinted she could reconsider her allegiance to ODM and cautioned the party against mistreating her.
The Starehe MP, referring to reports claiming she was about to ditch the party, said she could only work “in a party where she is celebrated and not merely tolerated”.
In a veiled threat to the party, Wanjiru said she could contest the elections as an independent candidate and win owing to her popularity.
“I will not go to some place to force myself.  If nobody wants me you know I am a leader who can be independent and still make it because God is usually on my side,” the MP said.
Wanjiru said there was concern in the Orange party over her political stand and cautioned the party against mistreating her.
“ODM is worried over my stand and there is anxiety.  I have received many calls from them wondering whether I am leaving the party. If you don’t take care of me well...” the MP added.
She was speaking when commissioning Rhonda Maternity Hospital in Nakuru, a project under the Housing Ministry’s slum-upgrading programme.
Running mate
The MP has reportedly been positioning herself as a possible running mate to Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Her sentiment comes barely a week after Nominated MP Rachael Shebesh was reported to be planning to ditch ODM for TNA.
Shebesh has, however, insisted she had not defected, but was shopping for a party and would declare her stand at the right time.
A number of politicians have ditched their parties while others are expected to declare their parties as the deadline for party membership and nominations approaches.
Speaking in Nakuru, Wanjiru urged the Luo, Kikuyu and Kalenjin communities to unite to end tribalism and foster national unity.
“If the three tribes unite, tribalism would end and the country would achieve a lot in development,” she added. Wanjiru urged those seeking governorship in Nakuru to pick their deputies from outside their tribes.
