PNU warns defectors of expulsion

By Boniface Gikandi
President Kibaki’s Party of National Unity has threatened to expel MPs who have crossed over to other parties.
PNU officials led by acting chairman and Kilgoris MP Gideon Konchellah, criticised MPs who decamped from the party to form other political parties, saying disciplinary action would be taken against them.
“It was an act of arrogance for leaders to desert a political party that sponsored them to Parliament and civic bodies. They could be part of the PNU which is still strong with President Kibaki’s blessings and ready to field candidates countrywide,” said the Kilgoris MP.
Accompanied by party’s national organising secretary Maina Kamanda and businessman Stanley Livondo, the officials spoke at Kihoya Anglican Church while campaigning for Paul Kimani Mugo, the party’s candidate in the September 17 Kangema by-elections.
Konchellah who assumed party leadership after death of former minister Prof George Saitoti in July termed the MPs who walked out of PNU as betrayers. The party, he said, would soon convene a national governing council to expel the deserters.
