Two ministers from the Rift Valley on Sunday led a section of MPs in cautioning the Kalenjin community against ditching the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Roads minister Franklin Bett and his East African Community counterpart Musa Sirma urged the community to shun politicians who were misleading them to achieve their own selfish political interests.
They were addressing a funds drive in aid of the construction of a secondary school in Baringo North District.
Eldoret North MP William Ruto has announced that he will use the United Democratic Movement (UDM) as his political vehicle in next year’s elections and is rallying the community behind the party.
Political destiny
“Time has come for us to ponder our political destiny or risk being locked out of this country’s leadership for many generations,” said Mr Sirma, a close ally of Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The nominated MP dismissed claims that he was going against the wishes of the community by supporting Mr Odinga.
“I’m entitled to my own opinions and I’m free to support whoever I wish,” said Mr Sirma.
Mr Bett said that the planned resettlement of the Mau evictees was not related to the 2012 elections and told off those politicising the issue.
Baringo North MP William Cheptumo, a close ally of Mr Ruto, steered clear of politics and instead called for unity among Kenyans ahead of the 2012 General Election.
