Kenyans must understand their cultural practices and history to understand the future, US Ambassador Michael Ranneberger has said. He said the history of a country is an important aspect in its development and its cultural sites must be protected. “It is important that we recognise the role played by cultural history and traditional values in the development of the country. It is with this recognition that we will be able to appreciate and protect our cultural heritage sites,” said Ranneberger.

Ranneberger who was visiting Kaya Fungo in Kaloleni urged the government to preserve cultural heritage sites across the country. Kaya Fungo, the biggest of nine kayas that represent the nine sub-tribes of the Mijikenda community, was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco last year.

The forest is a sacred shrine where issues affecting the Giriama community are discussed by elders. It received Sh800,000 from the ambassador’s self-help grant programme.

The money will be used to rehabilitate a water dam and complete a reforestation programme. The forest area will also be fenced.
