The Jomo Kenyatta Publishing Foundation has presented Sh75 million to 280 students in its student scholarship programme. The programme was started three years ago and aims at sponsoring bright students from poor backgrounds.

Yesterday, the foundation issued a cheque for Sh28 million to 280 Form One students from schools across the country. They were selected from a total of 1,087 applicants.

The scholarship officer Kepha Nyakundi said there are 1,380 students who have benefitted from the programme. They are between Form one and Four. “We pay for the student’s fee, medical expenses and other expenses. It costs about Sh40-50,000 a student. This year, we have spent Sh75 million,” said Nyakundi.

Among the beneficiaries is former Kenya High student Joy Vivian Nyakundi who took position seven nationally. Alliance High Principal David Kariuki said there are many undeserving students who are in the programme.

He urged the Education minister to increase the scholarship kitty as the number of needy students is high. Education minister Sam Ongeri said his ministry will ensure that talents do not go to waste.
