A warrant of arrest has been issued against flamboyant politician Stanley Livondo in an election petition case against Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The politician declined to appear before court yesterday to explain why he has failed to pay Sh1.75 million as cost arising from the petition. The petition he filed in 2008 challenging the election of Raila as Langata MP was dismissed by Justice Alnashir Visram three years ago due to lack of proper serving of the court papers. After losing the case, Livondo was directed to pay cost but he is yet to comply.

Raila, through Orengo and Advocates Company, approached court seeking to have the politician compelled to pay the money. High Court deputy registrar Patricia Gichohi had summoned Livondo to appear before her yesterday to show cause why he should not be committed to civil jail for failing to pay the debt.

But he did not appear personally as directed, prompting the registrar to order for his the arrest and imprisonment for disobeying her summons.

Justice Visram had said the plea by Livondo, who contested against Raila in Langata, was an afterthought. The judge said Livondo had failed to outline to the court what specific questions he wanted to ask Raila.
