A close ally of Prime Minister Raila Odinga has dared Eldoret North MP William Ruto to resign from parliament and promised to give him a run for his money.

Immigrations minister Otieno Kajwang’ told Ruto there is no guarantee he will come back as ODM will ruthlessly campaign against him. He advised Ruto to instead have his lieutenants test the waters for him first.

The Mbita MP revealed that he is the one who advised Raila in 1996 to quit Ford Kenya and seek fresh mandate from the electorate through NDP. He said he can no longer advise anyone to do a similar thing. “Raila was in the same position Ruto is in today and he was going to lose his seat because there was enough evidence against him. I advised him to quit. He almost lost because he won with a very slim margin of 4,000 votes against Kanu’s 2,000,” Kajwang said.

The minister said Eldoret North being a cosmopolitan constituency is unpredictable. He said if Ruto and Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka hope to use the resignation route to topple the PM from his seat they are mistaken because whatever the outcome, ODM would still have the majority in parliament.

Kajwang said at most and by good luck, Ruto could secure 15 MPs through whichever party he decides to defend his seat on. ODM which has 104 members would be left with more than 80 MPs.

Kajwang at the same time told Kalon
