Close allies of Eldoret North MP William Ruto yesterday publicly confronted Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi and asked him to run for the presidency instead of always playing second fiddle to Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Eldoret Mayor William Rono, Wareng County Council chairman Paul Kiprop and more than 30 civic leaders said Mudavadi has displayed strong leadership qualities. “We like your leadership style and we want you to go up instead of remaining someone’s shadow. We are ready to embark on aggressive campaign for you everywhere,” said Kiprop whose sentiments were repeated by the Mayor.

Mudavadi who was in Eldoret launching the Wareng county council's ICT programme and website downplayed the suggestion saying leaders should be concentrating on putting in place the structures for the 2012 polls before they can start jostling for positions.

Mudavadi who lectured the civic leaders on the need to cool down political temperatures to enable the smooth implementation of the constitution, said he supported the party‘s decision to expel rebel MPs from ODM because they had defied provisions in the new Political Parties Act. “When you look at what we have to do before August next year, I wonder if we really have the time for all this noise going on in the country. As chairman of the council and mayor please help to cool down this things so that we focus on the important agenda we have,” Mudavadi told the civic leaders.
