Wanjiru injured in accident

NYAHURURU, Kenya, January 21- Olympic champion Samuel Wanjiru was this evening involved in a road accident along Nakuru-Nyahururu road where he sustained minor injuries.
The accident occurred on Friday evening a few kilometers from Bahati township as the athlete was on his way to his Nyahururu home.

According to eye witnesses, Wanjiru was travelling in a Toyota VX vehicle which collided head on with an oncoming vehicle.

Mr. James Njuguna who was at the scene at the time of the accident said that he was travelling towards Nyahururu town when the accident occurred.

Njuguna said that the athlete who was driving the vehicle was trying to avoid a pothole when his car hit the lorry heading in the opposite direction.

Wanjiru was in the company of a friend who escaped unhurt

“The accident happened just when Wanjiru was trying to avoid a pothole some few kilometers from Bahati township and it seem he was speeding because he was unable to control his vehicle. The lorry was so close such that he could not avoid hitting it,” he said.

He said that good samaritans arrived at the scene immediately and rescued the athlete from the wreckage.

By the time of going to the press, the athlete was receiving treatment at Bahati dispensary as he had sustained minor injuries on his right hand.

Efforts to get comments from the clinical officers attending to him futile as they could not be reached.
