Mtwapa police boss killed in tragic accident in Meru

A senior police officer died instantly when the vehicle he was driving collided head-on with another at Kaithe market along the Meru-Maua highway.
Chief Inspector Stephen Mukangu who was the Officer Commanding Mtwapa Police station was heading to his Amwari village home in Tigania West district accompanied by his wife and eight year old son when the accident occurred on Sunday evening.
His wife Mercy Wangui and son Stephen Kimathi suffered cuts and bruises and were treated at the Meru District Hospital and discharged.
Mr Mukangu’s Nissan Bluebird saloon car was completely damaged on the driver’s side and the air bag ruptured.
According to the deceased’s son Mr Duncan Mukangu, 30, his father had left Mombasa to join the family for the New Year festivities.
The accident occurred as he negotiated a bend at Kaithe but his car collided with an on-coming Toyota Prado.
Occupants of the other vehicle suffered minor bruises.
Meru Central traffic boss Saidi Hamisi who was part of the rescue team said investigations into the crash had commenced.
The body was removed to Meru District hospital mortuary.
He is survived by five children.
Elsewhere, two people survived after the pick-up in which they were transporting miraa was involved in an accident at Ng’onyi area along the Meru-Embu highway.
The vehicle rolled two times as it avoided hitting an on-coming vehicle round a sharp bend during the Sunday afternoon accident.
In Bomet, six passengers - one of them in critical condition are admitted at Tenwek Mission hospital after the bus they were travelling in was involved in an accident along the Bomet- Mulot highway.
Several others passengers aboard the ill-fated bus that was heading to Mombasa from Homa Bay sustained minor injuries and were treated at Longisa district hospital and discharged.
An on spot check by the Nation at Tenwek hospital found the critically injured passenger at the facility’s intensive care unit on drips.
A medic at the health institution and who declined to be named described the patient’s condition as “serious but stable”.
The bus driver, according to the police boss George Ali Losku lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a sharp bend.
