Kibaki urged to reject legal fee proposal

An MP on Sunday asked President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga to reject the proposal to fund the legal defence for two post-election violence suspects.

Nyaribari Chache MP Robert Monda said it is against the will of Kenyans to “misuse their money for mistakes they never committed”.
Dr Monda criticised the decision by Cabinet to pay for the legal costs of Head of Civil Service Francis Muthaura and Postmaster-General Hussein Ali, saying every suspect should meet the costs alone.
“Nobody among The Hague suspects should be treated in a special way. Each individual should raise his own legal defence fees,” Dr Monda said in his constituency.
And the Rift Valley Human Rights Network has threatened legal action if the government goes ahead with its plans to pay for the legal defence Mr Muthaura and Maj-Gen (rtd) Ali.
“We shall challenge this move by whatever means, including moving very fast to court, to stop the government’s intention of misusing taxpayers money,” lobby co-ordinator Ken Wafula said.
