Kalonzo set for Western to rally support for 2012

Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka ventures into Western Province on Monday in a bid to market himself for presidency ahead of the 2012 poll.

A programme availed to the Sunday Nation by the VP’s handlers indicated that Mr Musyoka will hold public rallies in Bungoma, Busia and Kakamega counties starting Monday.

The VP’s tour into Western Province, perceived to be an ODM stronghold, starts from the Bungoma county on Monday during which he will address public rallies at Sikhendu and Kiminini trading centres.

He will later meet leaders from Trans Nzoia county with a view to hearing their problems. While there, he will launch a fire fighting equipment in Kitale Town.

Mr Musyoka will move on to Busia county on Tuesday during which he will hold a public rally at Kapsokwony Town.

On Wednesday, the VP moves to Busia county where he will hold rallies at Muyanga market in Teso District and Amagoro market.

He will wind up his tour by addressing a rally in Mumias Town in Kakamega county.

Private meetings

The Western Province tour comes against the backdrop of two private meetings a week ago between the VP, Finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Internal Security Minister Prof George Saitoti in an effort to weave out a winning line-up come 2012.

Following the two meetings, a team of six of their lieutenants was appointed to work out a system of strengthening PNU.

The six include Cabinet ministers Kiraitu Murungi, Chirau Ali wa Mwakwere, Yusuf Haji, Sam Ongeri, assistant minister David Musila and MP Johnstone Muthama.

The six met at Norfolk Hotel last Monday at 4 p.m. where, sources say, they discussed the possibilities of working out a party presence across the 47 counties and the formula for identifying the presidential flag bearer.

Although a decision has not been reached, the team is said to favour a system where the three presidential aspirants will face delegates from across the country at Kasarani.
