United we can bring presidency home, Kalonzo tells Kamba

Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka has told the Kamba community to forget the presidency in 2012 if they cannot unite and speak in one voice.

The VP said it would be an effort in futility if one of their own gunned for the top seat and the community shunned him or her.

The VP said it was shocking that unlike other ethnic groups, the Kamba were not proud and envious of their sons and daughters whose stars were rising, and were poised to take the country’s leadership.

Speaking in Mwingi Town yesterday, Kalonzo warned of a political doom unless the region "woke from sleep" and caught up with others leaders from other regions before the next General Election.

"You cannot assume the presidency if you cannot unite and speak in one accord. Presidency is no joke," the VP said.

He said the region’s people must think together, work together in laying a strategy to redeem Lower Eastern from political decay.

And at the weekend, the Vice-President said the new Constitution will greatly benefit minority communities who have been fighting for their rights since independence.

He said the passage of the new law marked a historic event in Kenya’s history, and promises a new hope to groups that have for years yearned for laws that would safeguard their rights and address historical injustices.

Addressing a delegation of leaders from Mt Elgon District who called on him at his Yatta home on Saturday evening, Kalonzo said the approval of the new Constitution reflects the desire of the Kenyans to put their country on a path towards improved governance, stability and prosperity.

He said the new laws give the indigenous people an opportunity to claim their rights based on various issues including cultural diversity and expression, human rights, land, environment and natural resources, and ensure equitable sharing of accruing benefits.
