Kenyans assured of job opportunities

President Mwai Kibaki has assured Kenyans that the government is devoted and is currently directing enormous efforts towards the creation of adequate job opportunities for the many qualified but unemployed Kenyans.

The President said the focus on job creation would be in both urban and rural areas where majority of Kenyans live.

President Kibaki made the remarks Friday when he met with members of the National Economic and Social Council (NESC) at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre.

The President noted that the hopes and expectations for the future among Kenyans were very high after the promulgation of the new constitution and urged members of the Council to formulate policy guidelines that would guide the government in achieving accelerated development.

"Kenyans are anxious about improving their living standards and their general welfare. There is urgent need to encourage and give them hope about the future," said the President.

'Taking power'

Commending the Council members for their remarkable work, President Kibaki noted that their output in the form of reports laid a firm foundation for official government policies in various important sectors of the economy such as energy, water and infrastructure.

The Head of State noted that many qualified Kenyans continue to graduate from colleges and other institutions of learning and their absorption in national development remained a critical challenge to the government.

President Kibaki further noted that the government was committed to increasing housing units around the country to cater for many Kenyans.

"Let me also assure Kenyans that under the new constitution there is provision for developing the rural areas under the county governments. Devolution means taking power to the grassroots. We shall therefore give much emphasis to employment creation in the rural areas and ensure people remain productive," said the President.

The President further gave an assurance that the government was committed to the full implementation of the elaborate bill of rights provided for in the new constitution and urged Kenyans to support government towards the realization of the same.

Transform Kenya

On his part Prime Minister Raila Odinga thanked the Council members for their tireless work and helping the government to transform Kenya into a true economic giant in Africa .

The Prime Minister noted that Kenya had not yet attained its full economic potential urged Kenyans to redouble their efforts in building a great nation.

He urged the NESC members from the private sector to examine various government policies including the new constitution.

The Prime Minister also appealed to wananchi to play their pivotal role in the implementation of the new constitution and to always raise alarm whenever there is evidence of deviation from the path.

Others who addressed the forum included the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Uhuru Kenyatta, Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet Amb. Francis Muthaura.

The occasion was attended by Cabinet ministers and Permanent Secretaries.
