The managing director of Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) David Waweru together with the firm's Secretary Hezekiah Oira have been sacked.

Mr Waweru and Mr Oira were suspended in June by the board to pave the way for investigations into the sharing of FIFA World Cup broadcast rights.

In June, the government ordered an investigation into how publicly-owned KBC exclusively sub-contracted World Cup television rights to Radio Africa Ltd through single sourcing.

According to a statement from the KBC board published on the firm's website, "the two have been sacked in pursuant to section 24 a) of the Employment Contract for the Managing Director and Section 15 (ii) of the KBC Code of Regulations.

KBC's Editor-In-Chief Waithaka Waihenya will continue serving in an acting capacity as the managing director.
