Four dead in Kenyan road accident

A police officer was among four people who perished in a grisly road accident that occurred along the Nyahururu-Rumuruti road.

Laikipia West OCPD Francio Nyamatari said two of the victims died on the spot when the vehicle they were traveling in got two tyre bursts near Rumuruti town and rolled several times during the Saturday evening incident.

Six passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Nyahururu district hospital where two of them succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment.

"There were two police officers in the vehicle and it is unfortunate that we lost one of them while he was being attended to at the hospital along with another passenger," Nyamatari said.

The two officers had escorted several suspects to the Nyahururu law courts where they were to appear for the hearing of their cases and had boarded the matatu on their way back to their work station when th accident occurred.

Four other passengers are still admitted at the Nyahururu hospital in critical conditions but the OCPD said they were responding well to treatment.

It was suspected that the driver of the ill fated matatu was speeding but Nyamatari said investigations have been launched into the matter.
