The ‘No’ campaign team led by Higher Education Minister William Ruto received 21 civic leaders who defected from the "Yes" camp as the group took its opposition to the Proposed Constitution to Meru.
The civic leaders took the microphone one after the other and declared they would oppose the proposed laws because they do not provide for county government for Tharaka District.
"How can your MP claim he is supporting the Proposed Constitution when all civic leaders agree that it is not a good one and it does not serve the interests of Tharaka people?" asked Igembe MP Mithika Linturi.
Travel far
Ruto told the crowd not to agree to a constitution that would make them travel far away to Chuka denying them their rights.
The minister told attendants to reject the document because of section 67 saying land had caused problems in places like Palestine and Israel.
Linturi said it was wrong for President Kibaki to use the Proposed Constitution to dish out districts and other goodies so that people can pass the document.
"The President is breaking the law. It is wrong for him to use Government resources to woe voters," said Linturi.
Imenti North MP Silas Muriuki said nothing had changed in the draft to make people change their minds to move from ‘No’ to ‘Yes’ as some MPs did at the weekend. He said: "Hakuna kitu kimebadilika ili niende niungane na hawa watu wa ‘Yes’ (Nothing has changed to make me shift to ‘Yes’)".
