Only 331 inmates registered in South Rift for Kenya's referendum

The Interim Independent Electoral Commission of Kenya (IIEC) has so far registered only 331 inmates voters in the eight GK prisons in the South Rift Region during the registration exercise which kicked off on Friday.

Central Rift election coordinator Mr. David Towett said Naivasha prison had so far registered 134 inmates, Nakuru-126, Maralal-10, Nanyuki-21, Rumuruti-15, Eldama-Ravine-10 and Kabarnet prison-15 inmates.

The exercise is being hampered by lack of Identity Cards among the inmates and Towett urged the relatives to avail the documents to prisons' authorities to enable the inmates to register as voters.

Towett said the exercise targeted a total of 6,399 inmates in eight corrective institutions in South Rift region.

The five-day electronic voter registration exercise which comes to a close on Tuesday is being carried out in all the penal institutions in the country following a court order which said prisoners should be allowed to participate in the forthcoming referendum on the proposed constitution.

The court stipulated that it is only inmates who have identity cards and are above 18 years and are of sound mind who would be registered to take part in the referendum.

Naivasha Maximum Prison has the highest number of inmates in the South Rift Region with 2,845 prisoners followed by Nakuru G.K prison which has 2,071 inmates.

Eldama-Ravine prison has 38 inmates while Kabarnet has 148; Maralal and Nanyuki Prisons have172 and 369 inmates respectively while Rumuruti and Naivasha Medium facilities have 160 and 596 respectively.
