MPs hefty pay rise criticized

The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) will mobilize Kenyans for a five-day nationwide strike if President Kibaki assents to the bill on the new pay rise for parliamentarians.

Addressing the media at COTU headquarters, Secretary General Francis Atwoli urged the President not to consent to the bill saying that doing so would be a burden to the already oppressed Kenyan taxpayers struggling to put food on their tables.

He termed the proposed bill as unwarranted and castigated parliament for passing such a bill without considering the impact on the economy.

'Plunder in disguise'

Atwoli said most parliamentarians were acting out of greed and they should have considered the wanting state of basic services like hospitals and schools before hiking their pay.

"The increase is in total disregard of basic services for the citizenry and only translates to plunder in disguise," he said.

The secretary general further affirmed that the proposed strike was already enjoying immense support from various sectors including the transport industry, civil service and the international community.
