Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka has organised a meeting for political and grassroots leaders from the lower Eastern region to drum up support for the Proposed Constitution.
Area MPs, church leaders, business people, members of the civil society and the Council of Elders are expected to attend the meeting scheduled to be held at the Machakos Sports Club next Friday.
Kalonzo’s move comes amid perception the region has been tilting towards the ‘No’ camp. The VP has sent out letters of invitation to the leaders for the meeting, which is geared towards drumming up support for the draft ahead of the August 4 referendum. Speaking during the opening of the Machakos Agricultural show last Friday, Kalonzo assured Kenyans that the contentious issues in the Proposed Constitution would be changed after the document has been passed.
He argued there was no need to reject the draft because of a few contentious issues. Kalonzo said plans were underway for the ‘Yes’ team to tour all parts of the country, urging the people to vote for the proposed document. He said the new laws would unite Kenyans irrespective of tribe and political affiliations.
"This Proposed Constitution once passed, will cater for the interests of women,’’ said Kalonzo at Chumvi junction, on his way to Machakos town.
