A police officer who was shot by suspected militia at Nakwamoru in Kainuk, Turkana South district has succumbed to his injuries at the ICU Wing of Kenyatta National Hospital.
Turkana South District Commissioner Joseph Kanyiri said the officer succumbed to serious wounds sustained during the Wednesday attack.
He was airlifted to Nairobi by the AMREF medical team for treatment.
Kanyiri said five other officers who were injured were still admitted in the same hospital where their conditions had been described as stable.
The officers were injured during heavy fighting between the police and the heavily armed militias as the security team tried to open a road that the militias had barricaded at Loyapate area.
Kanyiri said the gun men had also barricaded Nakwomoru-Lologon road by digging a trench across the road cutting off food supply to the hunger stricken residents.
He said security personnel in the region were on high alert following a report that heavily armed raiders were being brought in from a neighbouring country to reinforce suspected Pokot warriors who intended to carry out a raid in the Turkana region.
He said police officers had been placed along all possible entry points to avert the looming attack by the gang believed to have sprayed police vehicles with bullets on Wednesday.
