The National Land Commission on Wednesday took office with an appeal to Kenyans to avoid fighting over land during the General Election.
The Commission said it is equal to the task before it and therefore no Kenyan should lose his life on account of land grievances.
“Let no Kenyan use land as a reason to harm another Kenyan,” said NLC chairman Mohammed Swazuri.
He said the necessary infrastructure (laws and policies) are in place and therefore the NLC will hit the ground running.
Speaking during a swearing in ceremony conducted by Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, the NLC pledged that the Commission will adhere to the “rule of law and the supremacy of the Constitution” in dealing with the administration of land in the country.
“There are enough laws to effectively tackle sticking land issues,” he said.
He said the rule of law was particularly important given the sensitive and emotive nature of the historical land injustices.
However, even as the commission takes office, Mr Swazuri cautioned Kenyans against expecting a “quick solve” solution.
He said all land matters need “a careful analysis before a solution is found".
He said problems affecting land require a combination of solutions and therefore the commission will do everything within the law to solve the immediate as well as the long term issues affecting land.
The nine commissioners include Mohammed Swazuri (chairman), Tomiik Mboya Konyimbih, Silas Kinoti Muriithi, Rose Mumbua Musyoka, Samuel Kipng’etich Tororei, Abigael Mbagaya, Emma Muthoni Njogu, Clement Isaiah Lenachuru and Abdulkadir Adan Khalif.
