Extended version of racist remarks alleged to be from Donald Sterling emerges

11:28 AM

Extended audio of the racist remarks being allegedly attributed to Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling has emerged.
Deadspin has gotten their hands on an extended, 15-minute version of the conversation between V. Stiviano and a man reported to be Sterling. The original audio from TMZ was just 10 minutes, and Deadspin has posted the additional five minutes.
The most controversial statements had already been made public, but the extended wording of some of them is sure to be equally contentious:
Man: Well then, if you don't feel—don't come to my games. Don't bring black people, and don't come.
V: Do you know that you have a whole team that's black, that plays for you?
Man: You just, do I know? I support them and give them food, and clothes, and cars, and houses. Who gives it to them? Does someone else give it to them? Do I know that I have—Who makes the game? Do I make the game, or do they make the game? Is there 30 owners, that created the league?
The couple also discuss Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp as if he's some sort of racial demarcation and crudely bring up the treatment of black people and Jewish people in Israel and during the Holocaust.
The NBA has said that they will work swiftly to confirm if the audio is actually Sterling and verify that it hasn't been altered.

Michael Jordan blasts Donald Sterling for alleged racist remarks

Charlotte Bobcats owner and NBA legend Michael Jordan has provided a statement on the audio tape that contains racist remarks being attributed to Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling.
Jordan, one of the league's few minority owners, emphatically states that "There is no room in the NBA - or anywhere else - for the kind of racism and hatred that Mr. Sterling allegedly expressed." Jordan went in, basically, and left little room for dissenting opinion.
The full statement is below, courtesy of Tim Bontemps of the New York Post:
I look at this from two perspectives – as a current owner and a former player. As an owner, I’m obviously disgusted that a fellow team owner could hold such sickening and offensive views. I’m confident that Adam Silver will make a full investigation and take appropriate action quickly. As a former player, I’m completely outraged. There is no room in the NBA - or anywhere else - for the kind of racism and hatred that Mr. Sterling allegedly expressed. I am appalled that this type of ignorance still exists within our country and at the highest levels of our sport. In a league where the majority of players are African-American, we cannot and must not tolerate discrimination at any level.
The statement should carry enormous weight given who they're coming from. Not only is Jordan an African-American owner of an NBA team, but he's also the league's most iconic ex-player. Further, he's generally kept his opinions on political matters close to the chest, famously saying "Republicans buy shoes too" as a reason not to take sides on issues.
Between Jordan, LeBron James, Magic Johnson, Kings owner Vivek Ranadive and President Barack Obama, some of the biggest and most influential names in basketball and all of America have spoken up on the issue now. And they're all taking a very similar stance.
Commissioner Adam Silver has said that the league will move swiftly to verify that it is Sterling on the tape and that it has not been altered, and from there the league hopes to have a resolution within a few days.

Owner of city blast car seized in terror probe

 | April 25, 2014 |

BLAST_PIXThe owner of a car which exploded at the Pangani police station, killing four people, two of them police officers, was taken to court on Friday but was not charged with any offence.
Police said they would keep Mr Ahmed Dugal Ali in custody until they complete investigations in about 10 days. Mr Ali is being held alongside relatives Abdiaziz Bulle Ali and Mohammed Abdullahi Falir.
Anti-terrorism police are treating the three as Al-Shabaab suspects, Mr Cyrus Ikade, who is from the unit told a resident magistrate court in Nairobi.
He said the three were arrested on Thursday following the explosion. “The first respondent is the owner of the vehicle which exploded killing two policemen and two terrorists.”
He said he believed Mr Bulle and Mr Falir were close associates of the terrorists who died in the explosion.
Mr Ikade said he arrested the car owner shortly after he had presented himself to the police after he saw the car on television. He said the police had information that the men were all relatives and that Mr Abdullahi had spent the day with one of the terrorists on the Wednesday of the explosion.
Mr Dugal denied terrorism links, saying he was willing to help police with whatever information they were looking for. “ Let it be on record that I am opposed to what happened at Pangani…I am here and willing to help in any way possible,” he said.
But Mr Ikade said the men, who he said were from Mandera, should be investigated further to establish their true identities and motives.
“They are all dangerous and a threat to the security of the State and the public…their accomplices are still at large and are being sought by security agencies,” the officer said and requested for 10 days to conclude investigations.
The officer said he suspected the men could be involved in terrorism in and outside the country.
SENSITIVE MATTER
Senior resident magistrate Edda Agade said the matter was sensitive and that time was required to conclude the investigations. She directed that the men be held at Muthaiga police station for 10 days.
Separately, a couple arrested two weeks ago in Eastleigh and charged with possession of two hand grenades has been linked to the Al-Shabaab terror group.
Police said Islamic preacher Mahat Omar of Ushirika Bilal mosque and his wife Fordosa Mohammed were part of Muslim leaders who received 20 grenades smuggled from Somalia for terrorism-related attacks in the country.
A police officer swearing an affidavit in objection to their release on bond said the couple posed a security threat to the country and could access the rest of the 18 grenades to further the cause of Al-Shabaab supporters in the country.
A ruling will be given on May 2.
Meanwhile, police sources indicated that details of the Pangani blast vehicle’s ownership were obtained from the registrar of motor vehicles at Kenya Revenue Authority headquarters and that police were already looking for Mr Ali when he handed himself in.
The vehicle was registered in his name in 2000. Moments after his arrest, Mr Ali was handed over to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit and detained overnight, giving information that led to the arrest of the other two.
The Nation learnt that the police were working with the help of mobile phone service providers to trace the mobile phone numbers used by the terrorists in the days before the explosion.
The vehicle carrying the explosives was intercepted after the driver committed a traffic offence. Two police officers entered the car — a Toyota NZE — while their colleagues followed in a patrol car. On reaching the gates of the police station, the car with the suspects exploded, killing all on board.
The dead officers were identified as Constables Francis Murage and Samwel Cheptuk (a driver).
Meanwhile, a Mombasa court has given police 10 days to hold a Saudi arrested two days ago on the Kenya-Somalia border on suspicion of terrorism.
Principal magistrate Abraham Gachie allowed anti-terrorism police to hold Mr Alamri Ali Hanash Atif (below) for their investigations.
The fourth year surgery student at the Maastricht University in the Netherlands was arrested in Kiunga on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old from Riyadh entered Kenyan on April 18 from Tanzania through Lunga Lunga border without any valid document.
He was arrested with a Kenyan whom the police are questioning.
Mr Atif, who the police suspect to have been on his way to Somalia to join Al-Shabaab, was reported to have also visited Lesotho, South Africa, Zanzibar and Tanzania before his arrival in the country.
Separately in Kwale, Police shot dead a suspected Al-Shabaab member and recovered a Berretta pistol and three rounds of ammunition.
Msambweni police boss Joseph Ombijah said they linked the suspect identified only as Tumbo to Ali Delawa, another terrorism suspect, who was killed by anti-terrorist police officers in Malindi last year.
Police stormed the suspects’ house in the wee hours of the morning and shot him dead.
Mr Ombijah said the suspect refused to open the door when ordered to at 4am.-nation.co.ke

Uhuru sought divine intervention to terror from Prophet David Owuor

 | April 20, 2014 |
Prophet Owuor.2ELDORET, KENYA: President Uhuru Kenyatta is apparently so much concerned about terrorism and organized criminal gangs that a major cause of insecurity that he sought divine intervention from Prophet David Owuor.
The prophet on Sunday revealed to Kenyans in the last national thanksgiving prayer meeting in Eldoret about a late night lengthy phone discussion with Kenyatta.
The televangelist said the president asked him to pray that the Kenyan youth get actively engaged in national building and run away from the devil mentioning groups like Mungiki, radicalization of the youth and terrorism.
“The president called and asked me to pray for Kenya at this meeting; he asked me to pray that the economy they are working on will grow robustly and absorb all the youth,” he said.
Apparently the president also promised to host him at state house where they would pray for the country after he comes back from a regional meeting he’s attending.
The president also requested the preacher to seek God’s intervention in weeding out tribalism and corruption in the country.
“That is why I bring it to you that righteousness must thrive in order to clear out evil, corruption, homosexuality, immorality and terrorism in the mighty name of Jesus.”
Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi who was present at the meeting expressed astonishment at the great multitude that had gathered for the sake of the gospel never witnessed before.
“Leaders must be humble before God and true to their call for real life that benefits Kenyans,” he urged.
He further noted that all leaders that will attend the prophet’s forthcoming meeting would have been led of the Lord.
“God is real and He heals, I acknowledge that the prophet is a true servant of the Lord,” he affirmed.
Sudi said it was incumbent upon Kenyans to support the prophet given that other countries the world over were extending requests of invitation to him-prove enough that he was much sought after.
“You have preached mysteries here today, let the truth be said just as it is. It is a high time that preachers ceased coercing their followers into giving money for prayers in the name of God just that their children my live good lives,” he condemned.
The legislator also revealed how he and Uasin Gishu governor Daniel Kiprotich approached the prophet in an Eldoret hotel in 2nd January to organize for the meeting in Eldoret.
“I must admit that we were jittery at first but were later puzzled after he answered all the questions we had posed at him,” Sudi said.
Turkana Central MP, himself a preacher for 16 years also present at the meeting said that the Deputy President must be a happy man following Sudi’s salvation.
“Ruto had tried for a very long time tried reaching out to Sudi for salvation especially when we had visited Nigeria,” he reminisced.
Lodepe made a Macedonian call to the prophet requesting him to take his meeting to Turkana County.

BOSTON, MA
Kenya stands with the US government in the fight against terrorism, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has said.
Speaking in Boston on Saturday evening during the Dinner with Champions, an event held in honour of the Kenyan marathon team, Mr Odinga said Kenya just like the US has recently suffered from acts terrorism that threaten to disrupt the way of life of the majority of peace loving people in the two countries.
“What happened here in Boston during the marathon was an act of hate and cowardice that was meant to disrupt the peace and joy that has been associated with one of the most celebrated and historic marathons in the world. The people of Kenya join the people of America in condemning such acts,” the Cord leader told the Nation on the sidelines of the dinner.
Entertainment was provided by Kenyan artistes based in the US. Local children sung patriotic songs in memory of the victims of the attack that killed three people and injured more than 250 others. Caroline Wavai, a Kenyan survivor of the 1998 bombing in Nairobi, led the gathering in observing a minute’s silence.
Receiving the team, Mr Odinga said the history of Kenya’s runners in the Boston Marathon was well documented and he had no doubts that just as has become tradition, a Kenyan will win in Monday's race. “I’ll be at finish line tomorrow to receive you. We hope we win number one, two and three,” he said.

Exuding confidence, most of the runners who spoke to the Nation promised to give their best. “We know Kenyans around the world will be be watching us on Monday. We have the plan to win so tell them that we will give our best,” said Micah Kogo.
Rita Jeptoo, winner of last year's Boston Marathon in the women’s category will be competing together with other Kenyan stars like Sharon Cherop who won the marathon in 2012 and Caroline Kilel, winner of marathon 2011.
Others are Micah Kogo who finished second in last year’s event and Wilson Chebet who ran a personal best in Rotterdam 2011.
The former PM who was flanked by Mombasa County governor Hassan Ali Joho and senator Hassan Omar said Kenya’s long distance runners have boosted the name and image of the country. “Our runners are our best ambassadors and we have to support them. That is why I’m here and I’m glad to see so many Kenyans and Americans assembled here today,” he said.
Dinner with Champions is annual event hosted by Run with Kenyans to give support to the elite team that is to participate in the Boston Marathon. Four years on, the event has become popular not only with the athletes who are served familiar dishes such as ugali and chapati but also Kenyans living in the Boston area who get an opportunity to mingle with the stars.

How victims lawyer sealed Ruto’s fate at the ICC

 | April 18, 2014 |
ICCNairobi, Kenya: Submissions by the lawyer representing victims of the post-election violence sealed the fate of Deputy President William Ruto as it prompted International Criminal Court (ICC) judges to order the Government to force eight witnesses to testify against him.
The judges were quick to point out that arguments by High Court advocate Wilfred Nderitu captured the correct interpretation of Kenya’s laws, as opposed to those by Attorney General Githu Muigai.
The ruling could be a pointer to a looming showdown between the Government and the ICC, which appears to have taken a hard-line position against Kenya especially on President Uhuru Kenyatta’s financial records.
In their 78-page decision issued on Thursday, the judges gave Nderitu the thumbs up for correctly interpreting the Kenyan law, which they said Attorney General Githu Muigai had deliberately avoided.
“Mr Nderitu is the counsel for victims in this case. He is a member of the Bar of Kenya,” the three-judge bench said. “The Chamber is persuaded that Mr Nderitu’s position summarises the correct answer to the question addressed in this part of the decision.”
The judges said that in the course of oral submissions, Prof Muigai and Ruto’s defence counsel Karim Khan had evaded telling the chamber whether there was any Kenyan law that prohibits Kenya from complying with the prosecution request.
“The Attorney-General and the Defence avoided giving an answer to that question,” the judges observed.
They added: “Considering the vigour with which they opposed this application, the Chamber is confident that the Defence and the Attorney-General would have brought any such law to the attention of the Chamber,”
When he appeared at The Hague on February 15, The Government chief legal advisor told the judges not to contemplate issuing such orders on Kenya insisting that it offends the International Criminal Act.-standardmedia.co.ke
