Protestors confront Raila over food prices

By Augustine OduorHundreds of demonstrators protesting against high cost of living blocked Prime Minister Raila Odinga from entering his office.
Waving placards proclaiming, Tunataka unga! (We want flour!), the protesters sang and shouted as they blocked Raila’s entourage.
Attempts by the police to clear the way for the PM failed as some people lay on the road.
Left with little options, Raila stood atop his car and asked a representative to state the problem.
"Contrary to Article 43 of the Constitution of Kenya, which guarantees every citizen right to food, shelter, health … many Kenyans still languish in abject poverty and die due to hunger," said the representative.
The representative said prices of basic commodities have skyrocketed hence out of reach to many Kenyans who also walk to work due to high transport costs. But the last three points seemed to be the harshest that the PM had to contend with.
"Choose to be part of the solution and join us in solving the problem; or choose to remain a part of the problem and be solved with the problem or, resign and see us solve the problem," said the statement.
Raila said the Government was aware of the problems many Kenyans were facing and promised their be would be a solution. But the angry crowd could not take any of it: "Hon PM, you are a good friend but on matters of people’s right we cannot agree when you violate them."
Raila tried another trick: "Today there is a shortage of maize and the Government is addressing the problem."
But the crowd gave him a loud No! Then the PM changed tune and said Finance minister would make a major announcement on Budget day.
With no more options, the PM made a multiple shout of Harambee! With the crowd responding Unga!
