Police await medical report on student's death

Preliminary investigations into the mysterious murder of Mercy Keino a University of Nairobi student are ongoing as police awaiting the report of toxicological tests.

Police Commissioner Matthew Iteere on Wednesday told journalists that Mercy's mysterious murder is still under investigations as the report on her body is being awaited.

The post-graduate journalism student was found murdered along Waiyaki Way on the 17^th of June.

So far, 12 witnesses have recorded their statements with the police.

Iteere pointed out that from several witnesses who have given their accounts, the deceased is said to have taken a lot of wine and whisky.

"The deceased took a lot of wine together with hot drinks (whisky), leading to her shouting at everybody and breaking some glasses and picture frames at the venue. Twice she was taken out of the venue for misbehavior and rowdiness," Iteere noted.

He however said that it is puzzling that the deceased is said to have left the venue of the party un-accompanied.

"Well past midnight, the deceased decided to leave the venue and attempts by her cousin Scolastica to restrain her were fruitless. She later disappeared towards Waiyaki Way without company, leaving her bag and mobile phone with Scolastica," he added.

Witness statements also allude to the fact that a dark Mercedes Benz vehicle was spotted dropping a passenger on the spot where Mercy's body was found.

"A third witness has come up and stated that on the same night he was driving along Waiyaki Way towards Uthiru to drop a friend and on the opposite side of the road he spotted a lady frantically waving down motor vehicles. On coming back driving towards town, he saw a body lying on the road almost at the same spot where the lady was waving," said Iteere.

But a post mortem that was carried out on the deceased body confirms that her head was smashed, arms and legs had severe fractures while the body was badly bruised.

"Observations on the injuries on the body were consistent with the injuries on a body run over by a motor vehicle," he pointed out.

Meanwhile Iteere said that the investigation team has been boosted by two senior prosecutors appointed by the DPP for legal and technical advice coming on board.

He assured the public that a thorough investigation will be done on the matter saying that at the conclusion, all found to have been connected with the mysterious death will face the law.
