A group is rallying Kenyans to sing the National Anthem at 1pm on February 28, the day the National Accord was signed three years ago. The group comprised of Kenyans of diverse interests, political affiliations, tribes, religions and economic backgrounds is asking all Kenyans to take a few minutes at 1pm on that day to sing all the three verses of the National Anthem.
Going under the theme “1pm, 1 nation, 1 people, 1 anthem, united in 1 prayer for 1 Kenya”, the campaign is aimed at promoting peace, unity and kinship as well as to celebrate Kenya. “This is a day of reflection on what unity means to each and every one of us at personal level. It’s the day when I should ask myself what I must do to bring unity around my immediate surrounding,” Josephine Were, one of the coordinators said. “On February 28 2011 at 1pm, wherever you are, at work, in the supermarket, in traffic, in school, on campus, in hospitals, in churches, in mosques, game parks, at the airport, in Parliament, in State House, in your homes .. sing all three verses of our national anthem,” she said.
She further said the campaign has no other agenda other than to unite Kenyans. “We want to show that there is more that unites us than divides us as Kenyans," she said. We want to celebrate our Kenya and celebrate each other.”
It is a common knowledge that majority of Kenyans do not know how to sing the three stanzas of the national anthem. The national anthem is listed in the second schedule Article 9 (2) of the constitution as one of the four national symbols.
The other three are the national flag, coat of arms and the public seal. Unlike the national anthem, these three are very popular because they are easily displayed.
