DEVELOPING: As many as four people were killed and up to 20 others injured in a series of shootings Thursday in Hesston, Kan., officials said.
Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton said there were "four to five" diferent crime scenes in the area. Walton said the shooter was an employee at Excel Industries, and he was killed by authorities. 
"This is just a horrible incident," he said. "There's going to be a lot of sad people before this is all over," Walton said.
He said he couldn't give an exact number of people killed and injured.
"We want to get everybody identified. We're working on that," Walton said.
He added that the FBI and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation had been called in to assist.
More information is expected at the next briefing by authorities at 9 p.m. local time.
One of the shootings took place at Excel Industries. 
The company manufactures lawn care products, including riding lawnmowers, according to the company website.
Staff at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita told KAKE-TV the facility has received six patients from Hesston. 
Two of them are in serious condition, one is in serious condition, and the conditions of the other three are not yet known, the television station reported.
Excel Industries was awarded the Governor's Exporter of the Year award in 2013 from the Kansas Department of Commerce. The company manufactures Hustler and Big Dog mowing equipment and was founded in Hesston in 1960.
Hesston is a community of about 3,700 residents about 35 miles north of Wichita.
