Engineer Kipng’eno Arap Ng’eny, a former cabinet secretary who died on Tuesday will be cremated rather than buried at his ancestral home as per Kalenjin customs.
Ng’eny who served as the managing director of Kenya Post and Telecommunication Corporation and also as Water Development Minister in retired President Moi’s administration died at the Aga Khan University Hospital after a long illness.
After the Funeral service which will be held at the Consolata Shrine in Westlands on Saturday, Ng’eny will be cremated as per his wishes at a private ceremony in Nairobi. The ceremony will be a break away from Kalenjin traditional burial rites where people are returned to their family farm for burial.
Although ground burials are preferred in Kenya on religious grounds, cremation is seen as a better alternative as it is environmentally friendly. The late Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai is the most prominent in the list of known Kenyans to be cremated.
