CORD leader Raila Odinga yesterday said Kenyans called on him to intervene and force the Jubilee government to hold national dialogue on pressing issues. While speaking in Kisii during a rally ahead of Monday’s Saba Saba meeting in Nairobi, Raila said he had heard the cries of Kenyans while he was in America.
Raila, who was accompanied by former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula, said they will not stop calling for Kenyans to attend the rally at Uhuru Park. “The rallies are not about Cord but about Kenyans who are unhappy about the way things are being done by the Jubilee leadership,” he said.
“The only way we can amicably solve the many challenges facing this country is through national dialogue, which Jubilee failed to agree to.”
The former PM said Kenyans have raised their voices and President Uhuru Kenyatta has no option but to change his style of leadership by involving all citizens. “Tribalism and corruption are some of the serious challenges facing the country.
That is why all Kenyans have joined hands to change the trend,” Raila said. Speaking at the Gusii Stadium, Raila dismissed a statement by the President and other Jubilee leaders that dialogue be done through existing constitutional institutions such as Parliament.
Other leaders at the rally were Kisii Governor James Ongwae, Senators Chris Obure (Kisii), Bonny Khalwale (Kakamega), James Orengo (Siaya), Otieno Kajwang’ (Homa Bay) and Elizabeth Ongoro (nominated).
MPs Timothy Bosire (Kitutu Masaba), Jakoyo Midiwo (Gem), Juney Mohamed (Suna East) and Kisii women’s representative Mary Otara were there. Wetangula said Jubilee promised Kenyans employment, security, low cost of living and laptops in schools, which they have failed to deliver. He said Kenya is made of 42 tribes but only a few have been favoured.
“Saba Saba is going to determine the destiny of this country. That is why we are calling Kenyans from all walks to attend the rally at Uhuru Park,” Wetangula said.
Kalonzo said the coalition is above intimidation. He said they are fighting for the rights of all Kenyans. “Many things happened when Raila was away but since he returned things are moving well. This means that something is wrong with the Jubilee leadership,” Kalonzo said.
Bosire said Kenyans have constitutional powers to change the leadership if they feel that the current government is not performing.
