Nacada chairman John Mututho, who has been on a vigorous campaign to deal with excessive alcohol consumption in the country, is a man of surprises. On Thursday night, he made a tour of the Nairobi Central Business District and actually caused some panic to bar operators on Banda Street. But that was not all, Mututho was sufficiently philanthropic to sit down and buy a round for some revelers at a relatively quiet joint, which is frequented by journalists. But he also warned them that drinking too much was not good for their health and asked them to drink responsibly.

With President Uhuru set to travel to the US for the America-Africa Summit, we are told that civil servants are falling over each other for an opportunity to travel with the Head of State. Some are said to be making all manner of pitches on how they can help the government gain investors during the trip. One senior official, who is assured of going for the trip, was overheard saying that the scramble for space is all about the per diems.

On Wednesday evening, a member of the Presidential security was overheard telling his friends why they should respect his work. He said that since President Uhuru took over power they are working harder than they did during former President Kibaki's era. To prove his point, he went online and showed them the picture of the President riding a motorcycle with the security detail in toe. "You can imagine how those of us who are usually at a distance had to move fast from our positions. The President has too much energy," the officer told his friends.

Were some Cord leaders threatened with arrest and dropped their plan to camp at Uhuru Park during Saba Saba? If gossip within the government corridors is anything to go by, then this must have been the case. Our moles tell us that some Cord leaders were shaken when they got into a meeting with security chiefs after the doors were locked and they were lectured over their previous utterances. They were then shown "plans" that were circulating on WhatsApp about chaos and forced to sign that there would be no violence. The leaders never informed their top guns about what had happened leading to a consent order, which would have seen the top most leadership responsible for the violence.
