Ten people Sunday perished after a flood swept a Probox car downstream at Inkirgir at Isinya, Kajiado County.
Confirming the tragedy Sunday evening the area police boss Edward Wamalwa said a pastor identified as Ole Kimani who was driving the car also died on the spot.
The youths who had been camping for three days at Emamparisuai Festival Harvest Church in Isinya Sub County died on their way back home. They left in the morning to travel when the tragedy struck.
“We received calls from members of the public that they had seen an unidentified Probox car floating in fast moving water in the area that prompted us to move swiftly to the area,” said the Isinya OCPD.
When the police arrived at the scene they retrieved ten bodies. Two boys and seven girls and that of the pastor who was the only adult.
The vehicle had been pushed 10km downstream from the road.
All the dead had travelled from Namelok in Loitokitok.
Below 18 years
The police chief said that the dead were below 18 years except the pastor who was driving the car and one was the son to the pastor.
“We took all the bodies to Shalom community Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem,” said Mr Wamalwa who also warned the members of the public to be careful while driving during such rainy season.
He said it was difficult to remove the car from the scene as it was in a deep part. It is feared that the driver had used narrow paths and rough roads before they met their death.
Our efforts to reach Bishop Simon Ole Ntisha who heads the church were futile as his phone went unanswered.
