Gor Mahia's lead in the Kenyan Premier League was reduced to six points as they went down by a solitary goal to champions Tusker.
It was KÓgalo's first loss since May. They dominated play, created a few chances but an Ismael Dunga second half penalty was the difference between the defending champions and the league leaders.
Gor Mahia now have 44 points, Sofapaka are closing in with 38 points after their 3-2win over Thika United.
Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) who beat City Stars 2-0 on Friday have 35 same as Thika while Ulinzi Stars who played to a one all draw with Bandari have 34.
Tusker put some brakes on Gor Mahia's title chase with seven games to go.
Gor Mahia gave their all, but it was not going to be their day as Tusker with their only chance in the game secured the three points for the beer men.
Fans had jammed the stadium, hoping to see Gor Mahia chasing their first title since1995 go to 47 points but Bobby Williamson's tactics came to a cropper.
He decided to start with greenhorn Angelo Akumu, it failed, Paul Kiongera came in for him but was largely on the right flank, Edwin Lavatsa came in for Innocent Mutiso, but he added no spice in the KÓgalo attack.
It was a critical game, one that brought together two of the best clubs last season, Tusker the defending champions, and Gor Mahia, the league leaders and last season’s runners up.
It was a dull first half, one that did not produce any chances worth talking about.
The game was mostly concentrated in the midfield but the forward line for both sides looked bleak.
With the abandoned tie against Sony Sugar still remaining undecided after KPL reneged from an initial agreement to award Gor Mahia the three points, pressure is not on the leaders who still have matches against Mathare United, Kenya Commercial bank, Homeboyz, Sofapaka, Ulinzi Stars and Chemelil.
"It’s a game we should have won, but it’s sad we lost," said Coach Bobby Williamson.
It was the Scots first loss since taking over at Gor Mahia but he remains confident his side will win the league title at the end of the season.
"We are not losing focus. This loss has just briefly jolted us, but we remain on the chase," added Williamson.
Karuturi Sports and Homeboyz, both facing relegation woes played to a barren draw in Naivasha.
Gor Mahia has been leading the league for the better part of the second leg, they still need16 out of a possible 24 to claim their first league title since 1995.
"We remain first favourites, but we will not relent. Losing to Tusker is painful, but it’s a reality check," added the Scotsman. With the win Tusker now have 35 points.
SUSPECTS SHOT
Three suspects sustained gunshot injuries outside City Stadium on Sunday after they were shot for allegedly attempting to run away with the gate collection from Gor Mahia.
The suspects allegedly attempted to steal the money collected from fans at the gate during a match between Gor Mahia and Tusker FC.
