US government yesterday issued a travel advisory to its citizens over what they called heightened threats from terrorists and the spiraling wave of violence witnessed in some parts of the country recently. In a statement to newsrooms, the US said it has received information regarding potential terrorist threats targeting the country. “Terrorist acts can include suicide operations, bombings, kidnappings, attacks on civil aviation and attack on maritime vessels in or near Kenyan ports, although the pursuit of those responsible for previous terrorists activities continues, many of those involved remain at large and still operate in the region,” the statement read in part.
The advisory though exonerated the country’s popular tourist sites and Nairobi from the ban, advised all US government employees, contractors, grantees and their dependants against travelling to North Eastern and specifically El Wak, Wajir, Garissa, Mandera and Liboi because of the alleged security risks. Also included in the list of banned destinations are north of Pate Island, Kiwayu and north to Kiunga on the border between Kenya and Somalia. The US urged its citizens in the country to exercise caution in crowded places such as clubs, hotels, resorts, shopping centres, restaurants and bus stations, and monitor local media reports before visiting any other part of the country.
