NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 26 – President Uhuru Kenyatta has joined a stream of leaders who are sending in their congratulatory messages to the Makueni Senator-elect Mutula Kilonzo Jr, challenging him to get down to business and diligently serve his constituents and the nation.
The 38 year old secured what he termed as a ‘continental shift win’ to inherit the seat following the death of his father Mutula Kilonzo on April 27, this year.
President Kenyatta said that the win was an opportunity for the Makueni Senate heir to deliver his promises to his constituents and help them prosper.
“Your election is a chance to bring fresh ideas and I believe you will focus on service to the people and not politics,” the President said in his message.
The Head of State also asked those who were beaten hands down in the mini poll to work with Mutula Jr in ensuring that services were delivered to Makueni County.
He said that Kenyans and their leaders must learn how to move on to nation building after elections are concluded as opposed to mopping around.
“Elections are not an end, when the votes are counted and a winner declared, it’s our role to ensure the people who voted benefit from service delivery as opposed to endless politics,” he said.
Senators Mike Sonko and Naisula Lesuuda also tweeted congratulatory messages to the new Senator and colleague-to-be.
“Congratulations Senator @junior_mutula. Looking forward to working with you in the senate as I did with your father,” tweeted Sonko.
“Congratulations @junior_mutula for capturing the #MakueniSenateSeat. Karibu upper House,” tweeted Lesuuda.
President Kenyatta had also applauded Makueni residents for their conduct throughout the by-election process noting that they upheld the law.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission’s conduct in the by election was also commended with the President noting that the Commission oversaw a fair poll despite immense pressure from the competing political parties.
He however challenged the electoral body to take note of any challenges they faced so as to work on solutions that would benefit and ease such processes in future.
“The Makueni by-election was by all means a victory for our national institutions and the growth of democracy,” he said.
Mutula Jr joined the Makueni senatorial race a week to the mini poll and despite that, he managed to floor his four competitors by securing 91 percent of all the votes cast in the 914 polling stations in Makueni County.
He becomes the second Makueni County Senator, filling the big shoes that were left by his father Mutula Kilonzo.
“I will wear his shoes, polish them and tie the shoe laces,” he promised.
