Raila forgives burglar relative

FORMER Prime Minister Raila Odinga has forgiven his relative who broke into his office and stole $100,000 (Sh8.6 million). He also took his personal and official files and documents.
Raila yesterday requested the police to drop their investigations as he has forgiven the criminals. Nairobi CID chief Nicholas Kamwende yesterday confirmed that Raila had advised the police that he wished to withdraw the complaint.
At the Kibera law courts, Acting Senior Resident Magistrate Sammy Opande set free Edward Onyango Ketta, a relative of the Odingas who was charged with theft.
Kilimani CID Chief George Ojuoka had written to the court and stated that Raila had no intention of following up on the matter. Prosecutor Chief Inspector Jackline Kilonzo told the court that he had received a letter seeking to have the matter withdrawn under section 87A of the Criminal Procedure code.
Ketta can still be arrested and charged again if the police get new evidence. Ojuoka confirmed to the court that he had written to request the release of Ketta.
He said that police will return to Ketta the items which they intended to use as exhibits including two mobile phones. The request to drop the case appeared to surprise Ketta who was yesterday appearing in court for the ruling on his bail application.
The court had ordered Ketta be remanded at Kilimani police station for three days to enable investigators complete their work. On diverse dates between June 13 and 24 at the Raila Odinga centre in Upper Hill in Kilimani, Ketta, director of the centre, allegedly stole private documents which including hospital supplies, memorandum and articles of association, VAT certificate, proposed plan for construction, and an ODM party file.
He was also accused of stealing $100,000 (Sh8,600,000) that belonged to the Centre and that was in his possession by virtue of his duty. Raila has said that the criminals gained access to his personal office using a master key.
"It is hard to tell how they managed to get in as the door is intact. The building is also guarded by Administration Police who had not reported until now," Odinga said last week.  Two AP officers who were on guard have been questioned by the police.
