Corridors of Power

Thursday, July 25, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY POLITICAL DESK
The website put up by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has not been inherited by Deputy President William Ruto . Ruto is currently constructing his own website which will be up and running shortly. So if you though the DP's office was still analogue then think twice!

A senator known for his love of theatrics caused a stir last week when he and a group of 'bouncers' stormed Continental House where MPs have their private offices. The senator was reportedly angered by the parliamentary staff's decision not to allocate him the office previously occupied by flamboyant Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko. It seems the new senator expected to be allocated the office on grounds of his seniority and/or the length of time he has served in Parliament. When told the offices were specifically for MPs, the man mobilized his 'bouncers' on the phone and told them to break down the door of the office. They were repulsed by the parliamentary staff who warned them of the consequences if they vandalized the office in any form or shape!

Members of the National Assembly have perfected the impossible and unethical art of 'being-present-even- when-they-are-absent."  They duly arrive for the committee meetings, sign the attendance forms and leave immediately afterwards. The habit is so rampant that some MPs strategically arrive just before the meeting is ending, demand the attendance sheets from the clerks and sign in before they leave. It seems their ploy is to ensure they receive the Sh10,000 (Sh15,000 for the chairperson) per meeting which every member of the committee receives as sitting allowance.

Still on parliamentary committees, the Public Accounts Committee has since May this year, been laying the grounds for investigations into the acquisition of the BVRs. Despite the committee directing the office of the auditor general to investigate the matter and report to the committee within 60 days. This has not happened but it has not dissuaded the committee members from holding regular meetings allegedly to interrogate the IEBC but nothing ever emerges from these meetings. Maybe its time the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commision stepped in and investigate what is essentially an attempt to skim off public money.
