Corridors of Power

Tuesday, July 9, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY POLITICAL DESK
Several people who worked for certain presidential candidates have been warming up to parties affiliated to Jubilee Coalition hoping to benefit from being close to power. The staff of two presidential secretariats have reportedly been trying to worm their way into the TNA secretariat after their bosses appeared to go into 'slumber' following the announcement of the elections results. The two candidates have suddenly gone quiet on social media which they actively used during the campaigns. Some of the staff are also worried as they have not laid eyes on their former bosses since April.

A popular Jubilee Senator who has in the recent past not been on very good terms with the presidency has moved from commenting directly on current affairs on social media to using 'parables and proverbs' to make known his views. It is not clear how many of his former readers and followers will be able to understand what the man means since he tends to intermix Kiswahili and English proverbs and parables and well as obscure philosophical quotes.

The CEO of one of the blue chip companies in Kenya is unlike many Kenyans, not taking his future for granted. The man who it was once rumored would find himself in the Uhuru Kenyatta cabinet has been writing a Sh1 million cheque every month to an insurance company. Considering that the man's monthly salary is more or less this amount, it is not clear how he manages to survive. Our moles tell us that the man is able to make a 100 percent salary saving since the company has drawn up a list of allowances and other benefits which he and his family can live off very comfortably.

A governor from one of the countries in Central Kenya is having to deal with the conundrum of failing to keep his promises to those who 'sponsored' him during the campaigns and who have turned out to be his harshest critics or going flat out to meet the promises and face the boot from enraged wananchi. To avoid the pressure and stress, the governor has been spending most of his time in Nairobi and is waiting for the disbursement of the huge allocations he made in his budget which he wants to use to pay off his sponsors. Does this explain why such extravagances are being included in most of our county governors' budgets?
