Corridors of Power

THURSDAY, MAY 16, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY POLITICAL DESK
A second time MP from Central region was on Tuesday heard loudly complaining that the  the expanded number of MPs had made it difficult for him to catch the Speaker’s eye during debates compared to the previous Parliament. The MP said he had built his political stature by ensuring that the Speaker always picked on him to contribute to the debate during the live transmission of the proceedings. He said with the huge number of MPs, it was becoming impossible for him to use the same strategy to maintain his political profile as he is hardly seen on TV.

Who is better, a lawyer or a doctor? That seemed to be the inane debate that engaged Senators Boni Khalwale and Kipchumba Murkomen. Khalwale is a medical doctor while Murkomen is a lawyer.  Murkomen started it all when he referred to Khalwale as “the so called doctor” during the debate on a motion to remove Khalwale name from the Committee on Finance.  Khalwale who sometimes describes himself as a 'bull fighter" had an answer saying that while many of Murkomen's high school classmates may have gone on to study law, only a very select few could have made it to study  medicine!

The Parliament’s media centre has become dysfunctional since the departure of the media liaison officer David Mugonyi who is now working in Deputy President William Ruto's media team. Maybe its time Parliament appointed a substantive media liaison officer to deal with the growing complaints by MPs?

A parliamentary neophyte from Rift Valley believes the media is the main stumbling block to he and his colleagues getting the salary increment they have been demanding.  The man was on Tuesday heard cursing the media for providing live coverage of the Occupy Parliament demonstrators who were protesting the MPs demand for higher salaries. He not only accused the media of bias, he claimed more media attention was paid to the pigs than to those of his colleagues who are making an argument for enhanced salaries.
