If you thought football’s wonder WAGs carried in our first edition were the best The Nairobian could do, then you ain’t seen nothing yet! For the first time, we acknowledge the sizzling hot women who have played a significant role behind the scenes to propel Kenya’s national rugby sevens team to dizzying heights. No wonder New Zealand, Fiji, South Africa,
Australia England and the whole lot of them are gasping for breath. Turn the page to see exactly what we mean.
Name: Georgette Mawia
Significant other: Eden Agero
Whereas many ladies would prefer to have their men off the grid of women, Georgette Mawia is one of the chosen few who do not subscribe to that philosophy.
Having being brought up from a disciplined Christian family, Georgette spent most of her early life in learning to be a straightforward lady.
“I am happy that I met a man who also doesn’t believe in sugar coating; we tell it as it is,” she says
The student of Community Development at Moi University believes that Rugby as a sport has a way of bringing people together not only for fun but also a great source of inspiration.
“Like football, I enjoy watching rugby both local and international. Most of my weekends are well booked and if am not at a rugby match then am either at
Nyayo or City stadium watching my dearest K’Ogalo,” says Georgette.
Name: Kate Odunga
Significant other: Allan Omuka
It seems to be a trend that the Rugby boys end up dating their best friends. In early 2008 when Kate went to the Impala Grounds to watch a rugby match, she had no idea that it would be the day she finally meets the man of her dreams. A graduate of journalism and media studies from UoN,
Kate has spent the last six years of her life with a ‘very close’ friend in the name of
Allan. “When we were just friends, I had no idea that he liked me and I still don’t know what took him so long to make the move,” says Kate.
The two seem to be enjoying every single moment together and the young daughter of Kenyatta Hospital’s renowned radiographer says she would have no problem walking down the aisle with the Kenya Harlequins Winger.
Name: Christine Wanjiru
Significant other: Philip Wamae
KCB’s Philip Wamae has the good fortune of dating the smoking hot UON diva Christine Wanjiru. Curtis Lilako must have been a good go between for Wamae as Tina admits, “We met through Lilako, who had invited us for a game with my girls.”
The fourth year bachelor of commerce student says that after meeting, it took time for them to start dating.
“We have been friends for four years, and after knowing him well we’ve now been dating for 10 months and still counting,” says Christine.
A lady in real estate and property management, Christine turns up at rugby matches dressed to impress.
“I love travelling and Saturday for me is a rugby day. Many think of it as a dangerous sport but statistics show that rugby is just as safe as the world’s most popular sport, soccer, she says.
Name: Sheila Sintoiya Nakuoh
Significant other: Michael Wanjala
The petite swimmer dates Moran’s scrumhalf, Michael Wanjala, and they have been at it since meeting each other way back as students in Strathmore University.
“Our first close interaction was in a group discussion, where I learnt of his disciplined nature and team spirit,” says Sheila.
“Helping and encouraging people are my ‘weaknesses’, which have earned me the name ‘Red Cross’ from my family,” says Sheila as she peruses through her books preparing for second semester examinations.
Today, she is a Bachelor of Economics student at the University of Nairobi having completed a Diploma in Business Information Technology at Strathmore University.
Sheila finds pleasure in rugby, as it is the only game that made her develop interest in Kenyan sports.
“It is a game of intellect and speed in which gentlemen like my beloved Wanjala engage in. It is a game of passion which dies hard in a person, no matter how hurt one may get, they are always optimistic to rise and engage again,” reckons Sheila.
Name: Queen Aketch
Significant other: Horace Otieno
You have probably heard or read about this famous saying that “Wherever there are pro athletes, there are sexy women. They go together like milk and cookies.” A public relations practitioner with the love for cooking, travelling and shopping, Queen has been with the
Sevens loosehead prop for the last six years. Queen’s love for rugby developed after meeting Horace and since then she’s loved the fast growing sport coz “It’s very interesting to watch and has become a part of me since I met Horace. I had to learn more so as to be at par with my man,”
Horace loves to dance and he is known among his colleague’s as the ‘Kanungo dance master’ after a popular ohangla tune. During our interview, he couldn’t hide his immense love for Aketch. Describing her as “my soul mate, the thought of her keeps me going. She is all I have.”
Name: Evelyn Itabo Amonde
Significant other: Andrew Noel Omondi Amonde
Arguably one of the most successful WAGs in the country, Eva has been the force behind team captain Amonde for the last 10 years.
She says, “We met at a social joint after my basketball match.” Did somebody just say sports husbandry!
As a basketball player, (currently playing for Safe Spaces Club) Eva juggles between her small business, daily training and family life.
The two have been blessed with two daughters; Nesta Amonde, 10, and the lovely Nicole Ichia who’s just turned one.
