President Kibaki has said the government will use all means to restore peace in the Tana Delta.
Speaking in Matuga, Kwale, Kibaki directed the security agencies to take "whatever steps necessary" to end what he described as "barbaric killings".
Inspector General of police David Kimaiyo said he will seek the assistance of other government agencies including the Kenya Defence Forces to stop the hostilities which have so far claimed more than 170 lives including nine policemen.
Kibaki directed the Judicial Commission ofInquiry into the Tana Delta killings headed by Justice Grace Nzioka to expedite its report so that actionis taken against the perpetrators.
“In the meantime, to the people of Tana must regain their senses and stop such acts that have no room in this day and age. The local leaders should take the initiative and tell their people that there are enough resources in the vast county to take care of all their peoples' needs,” he said.
He said the government will not compromise on ensuring security and will take stern action against those perpetrating the violence "irrespective of their stature or position".
He described the attackers as "sick and mad people". He said those engaging in the violence in the hope of displacing the residents will not succeed.
Kibaki was commissioning the ultra modern Matuga conference centre at the Kenya School of Government. He was accompanied by the area MP, Minister Chirau Mwakwere, Msambweni MP Omar Zonga, Kinango MP Gonzi Rai, permanent secretaries Francis Kimemia and Mutei Iringo, assistant minister of State for public service Aden Surgow, the chairman Kenya School of Government Council Prof Francis Kibera.
