UHURU KENYATTA and William RUTO’s illegibility case set for February 7th

Thursday, the 24th of January 2012 -The High Court in Nairobi earlier today gave a February 7th hearing date to a case challenging the illegibility of Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto to run for the highest offices in the land in the March 4th elections.

The petitioners in the case, the International Centre for Peace and Conflict (ICPC) are challenging the legitimacy of Uhuru and Ruto’s candidacy in the 2013 general elections on the grounds that they fall short of the integrity test established in Chapter 6 of the constitution.

Uhuru and Ruto are among four Kenya facing charges of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC) stemming from the 2007/2008 post election violence which led to the deaths of some 1,300 people. The other Kenyans are former head of the civil service Francis Muthaura and journalist Joshua Arap Sang.

The pair have formed a political union together with other like minded parties dubbed the Jubilee Coalition (because Kenya is to mark its 50th year of independence this year) which is aiming to form the next government.

The High Court case has been cited as a potential hindrance to Uhuru and Ruto’s quest for power but some pundits believe that the High Court will perform some sort of Judicial gymnastics so as not to be dragged into politics.

More updates to follow.
