Ruiru TNA aspirant Gathii disappears mysteriously

SATURDAY, JANUARY 12, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY JAMES WAINAINA
There was tension in Ruiru town yesterday following the mysterious disappearance of TNA parliamentary aspirant Gathii Irungu. Gathii is a lawyer.
Gathii wife Jane Wambui said her husband last communicated with her on Thursday night, when he told her that he was headed to Nairobi to meet a Kikuyu musician Timmona Mburu. Afterwards his phone “died”. The wife said her husband had been complaining of threats from his opponents.
Her sentiments were echoed by Ruiru TNA chairman Caleb Munyui, who said Gathii had reported to him that he was being harassed and intimidated not to seek the parliamentary seat. It is feared Gathii’s disappearance is politically instigated. Munyui said Gathii is a victim of political thuggery and might have been hijacked to intimidate him.
On Friday morning his dark blue Prado was found at Kihunguro in Ruiru without Gathii’s trace. His phone was dead.
During the day, Gathii and his team had been campaigning and strategising for the January 17 TNA nominations.
One of his team members accompanied by the aspirant went to Kiambu to pick his vehicle which was being repaired.
The source said that after picking the vehicle they drove back to Ruiru town.
Just before midnight, Gathii told the team he was going to Nairobi to meet the musician. That is the last time they saw him.
Yesterday, agitated supporters took to the streets to demonstrate his disappearance. They pleaded with the police to find him.
Ruiru police boss David Kirui said police was investigating the disappearance and warned wananchi against speculating on the incident.
Kirui said the police was treating the matter as that of a missing person.
Earlier in the week, Gathii had reported that his life was in peril after his supporters were attacked by his opponent in Githurai. Two days ago his supporters were attacked by hooligans allegedly hired by his competitors.
He said the people who were last with Gathii including Timmona Mburu who he was to see in Zimmerman, Nairobi, had recorded statement. Sources said that Gathii was to see Mburu to organize a meet the people tour (Mugithi) planned for this weekend. It is claimed that the musician was preparing a song for the same.
