Narc Kenya presidential aspirant Martha Karua on Sunday warned Kenyans against electing leaders “whose leadership has been tested and found wanting”.
Speaking during a church service at AIPCA church in Kayole, Nairobi, the Gichugu MP cautioned voters against gambling with the country's leadership.
“You cannot afford to gamble with the presidency of this country for this is not a football match. We should vet all aspirants and every leader’s scorecard must be thoroughly scrutinised,” she said.
Ms Karua said that only candidates who have shown commitment to reforms, economic empowerment and the fight against corruption deserved to be given a chance for those are the main issues affecting Kenyans.
“Fighting corruption, implementing reforms and empowering Kenyans economically are the key issues topping the agenda for our people. Those with eyes should see and those with ears to hear. You should not be swayed by one’s popularity because we need to look keenly and choose wisely for the coming election is about our redemption as Kenyans,” she added.
Ms Karua, who has refused calls to form a coalition with other political parties maintained that she is in the presidential race to the end.
“I am in this race safe in the knowledge that my strength lies in God. There is no looking back. I am not Lot’s wife,” she said in total reference to the biblical story of Lots wife.
The former justice minister told the congregation to, not only pray for the country but to play active roles in politics as well.
“Prayer alone is not enough. You cannot vote for a corrupt leader and then hope through prayer that all will be well. Our actions must remain in tandem with our prayers because you reap what you sow,” she said.
In a thinly veiled attack on her main challengers for the top seat, Karua said her rivals are people who can no longer be trusted with the leadership of this country.
“You cannot trust a hyena to lead your sheep,” she said urging the faithful to vote for her in the coming elections.
She also urged church leaders to remain steadfast and pray for peace in the country as the nation approaches its first ever polls under a new Constitution.
Ms Karua was accompanied by Nairobi County Women representative aspirant Tabitha Wanjiru, Embakasi Central parliamentary aspirant Kariuki Njenga and a host of other aspirants for various elective seats around the country.
