Corridors of Power

TUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY POLITICAL DESK
Bishop Margaret Wanjiru was hard pressed to restrain herself when former Makadara MP Reuben Ndolo alleged that those booing him during a Cord rally in Kibera on Sunday afternoon were her supporters. The allegations did not sit kindly with the good bishop who reacted by raising her hand at Ndolo and was prevailed from following through her action by some of the Cord party officials who were standing next to her.

A wealthy parliamentary aspirant in Kisumu Central constituency has been going round the constituency boasting of having secured an ODM certificate from Orange House at the boggling sum of Sh40 million. Our moles tell us concerns are being raised as to the man's source of campaign finances....if he can fork out Sh40m for the nomination, what will he spend on the campaigns? The man, who recently assaulted a journalist who was taking photos of him dishing out money to the electorate is also bragging that he had secured a nomination certificate for his friend who wants to vie as a county representative.

It seems the more things change, the more they remain the same. A senior Webuye policeman has taken it upon himself to help his bar owner friend beat his business rivals by authorizing the arbitrary arrest of patrons who patronize other bars. The patrons are arrested and charged with frivolous offenses to drive home the message that they should not patronize other bars other than that run by the policeman's friend. The cop has shamelessly sent emissaries to other bar owners telling them to 'close shop or continue facing my wrath.' A case in point was during the recent festive season when the senior cop sent his juniors to raid the rival bars claiming they were operating before hours. The bars had just opened for business at 5 pm which is the time stipulated in the Mututho laws.  When asked why they were misinterpreting and acting illegally, the policemen said they were following 'orders from above!'
