Chris Brown snubs Kora Awards after jetting into Ivory Coast

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 2, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY GRACE KERONGO
Controversial American singer Chris Brown was supposed to be the star act at the Kora Awards but he was smack in the middle of everything that went wrong with the awards.
According to AFP, the ceremony that was originally set for Saturday, December 29 had to be postponed “at the last minute” to Sunday December 30 because “Chris Brown missed his flight”.
Later the founder of the awards, Ernest Adjovi blamed the postponement on “heavy rains and other logistical hiccups”.
Chris landed in Abidjan on the day of the ceremony with his girlfriend Rihanna. He failed to show up at the Kora Awards where he won the Best Male Diaspora award.
Apparently he was performing at a peace concert in the main stadium of the Ivorian economic capital, just minutes away from the Hotel Ivoire where the awards ceremony was taking place. He is reported to have sung just one song.
At the time of going to press the official list of winner had still not been released, however according to Ivorian press outlets, the big winners of the night were Nigerian artistes Chidinma and Davido who bagged Best Male Newcomer and Best Female West African Act respectively. Ivorian musicians DJ Arafat received the award for Best Artiste of Western Africa while fellow country band Magic System won the Best African Group beating Kenya’s Camp Mulla who were in the same category.
Rwandese singer Sessimã trounced other female contestants like Keko (Uganda), Nuella (Cote d’Ivoire) and Amira Fathy(Egypt) in the Best Female Newcomer category for the award.
Algerian singer Cheb Khaled Rai was awarded to Best Artiste North Africa, while "mama" Patience Dabany, former First Lady of Gabon and mother of the current head of state Ali Bongo, was celebrated as "Woman of the Year."
