Sonny Carter, a 7-year-old from Gaywood, England was out with his family the day after Christmas, and decided to use his new metal detector to track down hidden treasure but wound up finding a World War II era “practice bomb.” Just five minutes into searching, the metal detector beeped and the Carter family started digging, uncovering the 11.5-pound device. Before they were certain what the large metal find was, the Carters took it home in their car to wash it. The bomb disposal squad of the Royal Air Force (RAF) was dispatched to the Carter home and removed the device that was found not to contain any explosives. An RAF spokesperson said, “The idea of a practice bomb is that it follows the trajectory of a larger bomb but at reduced cost and without the damage caused by the normal weapon." They also advise the public to contact emergency services if they encounter any suspicious items and to not move them.
