United Republican Party has allayed fears that some aspirants will get direct nomination for the party’s ticket ahead of the next general election.
URP leader and presidential candidate William Ruto said no aspirant should expect the party ticket without the approval of members in their region.
He was speaking at a URP rally in Sotik Primary School at the weekend. “It will be very unfortunate for you come January if you are expecting direct nomination,” said Ruto
He was reacting to fears raised by aspirants in Sotik that MP Joyce Laboso, who defected from ODM, had been promised the party ticket.
Laboso dismissed the claims. “I do not want a free ticket. Everyone should know that I will battle it out with other aspirants for the ticket because I know my track record will reward me,” she said.
URP's nomination will be held in January next year. The Eldoret North MP ruled out a per-election coalition saying he will only enter into a coalition after the first round of election.
Ruto said the decision to enter into coalition with other parties is not an individual decision. “I will not make the decision myself. My supporters want me to be in the ballot in the first round and so it shall be. After the first round the URP executive council will decide who we will support,” said Ruto
Ruto was accompanied by MPs Zakayo Cheruiyot, Kazungu Kambi, Sophia Abdi, Rachel Shebesh, Gideon Mbuvi, Joshua Kutuny and Aden Duale.
Cherengany MP Kutuny asked Ruto and Uhuru not to back down from the presidential race because of the criminal charges they are facing at the ICC.
Dujis MP Aden Duale echoed Kutuny’s sentiments. “We are backing you. Do not change your mind, just stay focused on the race,” he said. Ruto assured them he will not back down. “Do not be believe some reports in a section of the media. Those are mere speculations,” he added.
