AG wants ‘Sonko’ probed over extortion claims

By CYRUS OMBATI
Attorney General Githu Muigai wants the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to investigate Makadara MP Gidion ‘Sonko’ Mbuvi over claims of extortion of money over a piece of land valued at Sh360 million in Nairobi’s Muthangari area.
In a letter to CID director Ndegwa Muhoro dated September 21, Prof Muigai informed him that the Makadara MP had written to the Lands Minister James Orengo and copied the AG alleging the parcel of land LR 209/14310 IR NO 120811 was a public utility vested upon the Kenya Police, but had been grabbed by Kanorero River Farm Limited.
Muigai said he received a separate letter from the director of Kanorero Farm, a Mr Maina Chege, who asserts he is the rightful owner of the property while denying Sonko’s allegations.
“Mr Chege contends that although the property in question shares a common boundary on one side with Muthangari Police Station, the properties are different as verifiable from the Lands office and director of Survey,” Muigai said.
 Desire to extort
The AG says Sonko’s complaint is inaccurate and motivated by a desire to extort him based on an agreement for sale of the property that has not been concluded.
“The purpose of this letter therefore is to request you to institute thorough investigation into the matter and report on the same appropriate action,” the AG’s letter read in part.
Last week, Sonko confronted the AG in Parliament and accused him of protecting those stealing public property before legislators intervened to scuttle their near scuffle.
In his reply in a letter dated October 9, Sonko said it was unfortunate that instead of co-ordinating with the investigating organ of the Government to unearth what he saw as a fraudulent dealing, the AG was seemingly in support of the land grabber operating under Kanorero River Farm Limited.
“Maina Chege alleges I attempted to extort money from him. I wonder why he did not report the same to police and even trap me with treated money,” the MP wrote to Muigai.
